Navigating the Process

Officials are needed across the country in all sports to ensure that high school games are able to be played. New officials and veteran officials looking to get certified to work high school games are encouraged to start their registration process as early as possible to ensure you get connected with the local assigner who can provide specific information about registration requirements for their association.

How High School Associations Work

Each state has a state high school athletic association that governs high school sports programming and certifies officials for their contests. In each state, local or regional associations split the state into geographical sections to assign officials to games in that area. Officials must register with both the state and local association and meet the requirements of each to be eligible to work high school games

New Official Checklist

1. Register with the state high school athletic association. High school sports are governed by a state association. New officials should first complete the registration requirements for their state.
2. Register with a local association. Officials must register with the local association in the geographical area they wish to officiate. During your state registration process, officials may be automatically connected with the local association. If not, the state should provide instructions on how to contact the local association or assigner. 
3. Complete pre-season training requirements. Most local associations will require officials to complete a number of in-person or virtual training clinics prior to the start of each season. This could also include working scrimmages or attending state rules meetings. This information should be communicated through the assigner of the local association.
4. Pass NFHS rules exam. All officials must complete and pass the NFHS rules exam for each sport they officiate. These exams are typically online and open book.
5. Get Ready for the Season: Make sure you have all the needed officials equipment for the sport and set your availability with your local assigner.
